In 2003, I was attending Hutchinson Community College and taking Intermediate Algebra. I was scared to death that I couldn't pass the class. I knew I had to do it though so that I could complete College Algebra in order to graduate. This was a requirement, so that I could go on to earn my Master's degree as a Marriage & Family Therapist. I wasn't sure that I could make it since Math had never been a strength for me! One day at the beginning of the semester, I passed an instructor's doorway and saw a sign which read:
"If you really want to do something, you'll find a way. If you don't, you'll find an excuse."
I read that sign everyday on my way to another class; ironically it was a class on 'Death & Dying'. It seemed appropriate to be thinking of Algebra everytime I attended that class! One day, near the end of the semester (with me already signed up for College Algebra), I noticed the sign had been removed! I panicked! So I kept an eye out for the instructor and one day I saw him in his office. I wanted to ask him about the sign, but felt silly and walked on...But I really wanted a copy of that quotation! So I walked back to his office and asked about the missing sign. He had forgotten about it, but soon realized what I was talking about. I asked if I could have a copy and he said I could just have his. (He had stuck it in a file cabinet already). I took it home and made several small copies. I stuck one inside of my notebook so that I'd have it with me daily. I posted one beside my home computer. I stuck one on my bathroom mirror! I read this quotation all the time, as a reminder that I could make it through College Algebra, if only I believed that I could. Lo and behold, I finally made it! Guess what? To this day, I still have the small copy stuck up beside my home computer! I still believe in that quotation even more than ever...I hope you believe in it too! :)
