With few legal exceptions, the law protects the relationship between you and your therapist. We are unable to disclose anything which has been discussed during your therapy to anyone else- including your friends or family, without your explicit written consent. Exceptions include: • Suspected child abuse or dependant adult (handicapped) or elder abuse, for which we are required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately. • If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, we must notify the police and inform the intended victim. • If a client intends to harm himself or herself, we will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in insuring their safety. However, if they do not cooperate, we will be required by Kansas law to take further measures (even without their permission), in order to ensure their safety. • If records are subpoenaed by a court of law, the therapist must provide the clients' records to the court. Before reporting on any of these situations, Joyce A. Thompson would first seek guidance from her Post Graduate supervisor, J. Michelle Robertson, PhD, LCMFT to ensure whether or not the situation is actually reportable under Kansas law. She would also discuss her intentions with you prior to her reporting of the incident. Before reporting on any of these situations, Lisa M. Butler would first seek guidance from her Post Graduate supervisor, Brenda Harvey-Smith, MSFT, LCMFT to ensure whether or not the situation is actually reportable under Kansas law.
